CALLING ALL BAKERS to enter our Great Illinois Valley Cake Derby 2025! Donate a cake, compete for ribbons, prizes, and bragging rights, and help raise funds for the Southern Oregon Guild. All bakers are eligible, even professionals, but cakes must be made in home kitchens, not commercial bakeries. Cakes must be entered under the baker’s name and bakers must follow OHA food handler guidelines.
Competitors can win awards in one of four categories – layer or bundt cake, sheet cake, cheesecake, and art cake. You can also enter the same cake in layer, sheet, or cheesecake as well as art cake. All cakes will be judged first on quality of the cake itself so that, in the first three categories, an especially delicious cake can win a ribbon with a simple presentation. The art cake category will call for creativity in presentation as it will be judged both on the quality of the cake and on uniquely original visual presentation. Artistic presentations can be beautiful, humorous, suggest a theme or holiday, or make a statement. Creativity will be the judges’ guide!
Judges will be gourmet cook, Donna Parrish, master baker, Kate Dwyer, and Rene Eichmann of Bridgeview Winery. The three judges will need cake samples to taste. Three samples might be in the form of cupcakes or slices of a second cake that you make to keep at home. First, second, and third place ribbons will be awarded in all four categories. Following the horse race theme, a Grand Champion and a Reserve Grand Champion will be selected from among the top winners of all categories.
