Dunk a Cop-Special Olympics Fundraiser
The Grants Pass Police Department will host its third annual "Dunk-A-Cop" event fundraiser on Saturday to benefit Special Olympics.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of 6th and G streets in Grants Pass to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics Oregon athletes. It's free and open to the public.
Grants Pass police officers, Josephine County sheriff's deputies and other local law enforcement officers will don their swim trunks this winter for a great cause -- to help Special Olympics athletes with intellectual disabilities. Every ball thrown brings them closer to the 40-degree water, but they gladly plunge with a purpose.
Retired GPPD Captain Jim Hamilton said a donation of $5 will get participants one throw and it's $10 for three throws while a guaranteed dunk is a flat $25 donation. He said they hope to far exceed their $5,000 goal for the event.
Dunk-A-Cop is one of several local micro-fundraising events leading up to the Southern Oregon Polar Plunge for Special Olympics. This year, the Plunge is set for March 4th at the Rogue Valley Country Club in Medford. It benefits more than 12,000 Special Olympics athletes across the state.
All money raised provides uniforms, sports equipment, and health and wellness programs in addition to year-round sports training for athletes with disabilities. To register for the Southern Oregon Polar Plunge, please visit "soplunge@soor.org."
