"It's the Climate" 100 Year Celebration
Monday, July 20th, GP's "It's The Climate" sign will celebrate its 100th birthday, and we think that's worthy of a celebration!
The City of Grants Pass in conjunction with Evergreen Federal Bank will sponsor a Centennial Celebration of the city’s iconic “It’s The Climate” sign on the 100th anniversary of the sign’s first appearance over Sixth Street in downtown Grants Pass.
Festivities will be conducted 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, featuring happy birthday party favors, a Cavalcade of Cars parading beneath the sign, and live streaming video of the event from the city’s Welcome Center on the corner of ‘G’ and Sixth streets.
“The idea was to create an event to honor this momentous occasion, while also adhering to social distancing guidelines that would ensure participants could safely celebrate this iconic and important piece of Grants Pass history,” said city Information Coordinator Steven Sabel.
A giant steel-constructed birthday cake, courtesy of Evergreen Federal Bank, will lead the Cavalcade of Cars as members of local car clubs and motorists drive a pre-determined loop up Fourth Street, across ‘D’ Street, and down Sixth Street to pass beneath the famous sign. Motorists are encouraged to join the parade touting their party favors and tooting their horns in celebration. Those with unique vehicles and classic cars are encouraged to bring them out for a historic drive beneath the sign.
“Those who wish to be a part of the celebration can participate without having to leave their vehicles, while those who wish to safely view the festivities from home can also enjoy the event,” Sabel said.
Live streaming of the event will include camera footage of the parade of vehicles traveling beneath the sign, as well as interviews of local dignitaries from inside the Welcome Center discussing the historical significance and cultural importance the 100-year-old sign represents to the community of Grants Pass.
Local residents who wish to join the Cavalcade of Cars can receive free party favors at the city’s Grasshopper Parking Lot on the corner of Fourth and ‘F’ streets before proceeding to the parade route.
