RV Symphony Presents: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
What's Interesting: Beethoven’s most widely recognized piece, Symphony No. 5, was one of the earliest symphonies to call for trombones in the brass section, and the first to reintroduce a theme from one movement to a later one. Grammy-nominated, Estonian-born bassoon virtuoso Martin Kuuskman, constantly pushing the boundaries for new artistic and technical possibilities, has premiered eight bassoon concertos, all written and dedicated to him. Grammy-nominated Christopher Theofanidis’ Bassoon Concerto was composed for Kuuskman. Both artists were students at the same time at Yale. Theofanidis quotes the following about Kuusman in his personal program notes about the concerto: “I have known many musicians of an extremely high caliber in my life, but Martin really stands out from among even the most accomplished of those.”
