Virtual Babysitting Training*Sign-Ups
Finding adequate childcare is a challenge for many parents and adapting to life during the COVID-19 pandemic left limited options. The OSU 4-H program realized that they could help address this critical need with a creative redesign of existing curriculum. In short order, the Virtual Babysitter Training was born.
Initially coordinated by OSU Extension 4-H Faculty in Clatsop County, the program was an almost instant success and soon went statewide. 4-H Faculty from all parts of Oregon volunteered to lead youth, ages 10 and up, in engaging online instruction. Among these educators are Josephine County Extension Service members: 4-H Faculty, Susan Hunt, and Education Program Assistant, Mary McNamee. Sue and Mary assisted with a training session last fall, which included over 60 students, and the following session included more than 90 students.
The training divides participants into small groups of 8 to 10 to facilitate a more intimate learning experience. Mary observed that even shy students gain the confidence to turn on their video cameras and participate in open discussions. Over four days, instructors teach youth about many aspects of babysitting, such as safety and basic first-aid, baby care, toddler care, healthy snacks, business tips, and age-appropriate recreation. Sue was surprised at the level of safety awareness youth already possess and is excited to see students “learn new skills and build confidence to serve their neighbors.” Upon completion, youth leave with an achievement certificate, the fundamentals of childcare, and hopefully, the ambition to provide services within their community.
The next Virtual Babysitter Training is a four-class series that will take place on February 22 and 24, and March 1 and 3, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This training is free and does not require 4‑H program enrollment to participate. If you or someone you know is interested, REGISTER HERE or contact Mary for more information (mary.mcnamee@oregonstate.edu). Additional Virtual Babysitter Training sessions will be held quarterly throughout the year to accommodate the growing demand for this resource.
