Tuesday, November 16, 8 AM – 10 AM.
Seminar Topics:
Oregon Paid Sick Leave
Oregon is poised to become the fourth state in the country to mandate that employers provide protected sick time to all employees. On June 12, 2015, the Oregon legislature passed Senate Bill 454, mandating sick time to be provided by Oregon employers starting on Jan 1, 2016. Please join us for this presentation on the status of what will be required of employers across the state. Topics will focus on complying with the detailed requirements of the law, including who is an eligible employee, the minimum accrual rate, and notice and use requirements. On an employer-specific level, Sean will also discuss the adjustments that may be needed for call-in and absence control policies, as well as the rights and responsibilities of both employers and employees.
Independent Contractor vs. Employee Status
The Department of Labor has issued new guidance on the misclassification of employees as “independent contractors” and new proposed rules increasing the salary level for certain exempt employees. Employers looking to stay ahead of the curve must analyze and adapt their various employee classifications to avoid misclassification penalties and lawsuits. This portion of the seminar will focus on ways employers can prevent misuse of employee misclassifications, from the “white collar exemptions” to independent contractors and interns, and the potential financial penalties that may impact noncompliant employers.
